Jake Hall (Business Development Manager at Feyen Zylstra) is oftentimes better known as the "Manufacturing Millennial". Since graduating Grand Valley State University with an engineering degree his career has been focused on automation and manufacturing. With 10 years of experience in automation distribution, machine builders and systems integrators, Jake has gained a vast knowledge of different manufacturing processes and the type of solutions that bring companies into the Industry 4.0 revolution. When the mandated industry shutdown in Michigan happened in 2020, Jake sought new ways to engage others and continue to share the benefits of automation to others while working from home. He turned to LinkedIn as a platform to grow his personal brand, “The Manufacturing Millennial” by creating and sharing content around manufacturing and automation. His content has reached over 3.5 million views and growing over 15,000 Followers.

Patricia Lopez - Patricia currently works as the Chief Operating Officer of Alchemist Ventures as well as the Chief Executive Officer of Rose-A-Lee Technologies, a WBENC Certified engineering services company in operation since 2013 that provides machined details and welded fabrications. Additionally, she also holds the position of Vice President of Operations for Rose-A-Lee’s parent company, Elmhirst Industries. Prior to joining Elmhirst in 2009, Patricia worked for Chrysler rotating through various manufacturing facilities as she increased her responsibility. She holds both a bachelor of science in Mechanical Engineering and a master of engineering in Manufacturing Systems from Lawrence Technological University.

Keynote Presentation Synopsis: VR / AR: Bridging the Gap between the Intangible and the Built Environment

Virtual reality and augmented reality, like many technologies, began as a concept of experiencing intangible objects and environments digitally. As technology progressed, that concept became a reality and has transformed into a multibillion-dollar industry that allows the real world to be virtualized and augmented. In today’s AEC industry, architects, engineers, and owners have to deal with intangible project concepts, such as how people experience time and space in the built environment. This presentation discusses how we can use VR / AR to design and develop these environments, producing outcomes that better serve the users that inhabit them.

Presenter Bio: Katy Rupp, Architectural Designer, Ghafari Associates

As one of Ghafari’s leading champions of virtual reality technologies, Architectural Designer Katy Rupp is skilled at developing highly immersive visuals that enable project stakeholders to virtually explore the physical environments we design long before they are ever constructed. She leads internal VR training and has also presented and demoed these technologies at a variety of industry forums, including most recently at the 2018 AIA Detroit Celebration of Architecture as part of the Technology in Architecture Practice / Detroit Area BIM User Group exhibit.

Katy joined Ghafari in 2014 and has developed a portfolio that includes healthcare, automotive, hospitality, commercial, residential, and education-sector projects. She holds a Master of Architecture from Boston Architectural College and a Bachelor of Science in architecture from Lawrence Technological University.
