By Brigitte Gledhill

Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR): These technological advancements are positively disrupting approaches to all kinds of traditional processes, such as cargo training, in this case. CargoForwarder Global spoke to the Co-Chair of VR/RA Association’s Training Committee, Brian Parzer, to understand more on what is changing.

CFG: What is the VR/AR Association?
BP: The VR/AR Association (VRARA) is an international organization designed to foster collaboration between innovative companies and brands in the VR and AR ecosystem that accelerates growth, fosters research and education, helps develop industry standards, connects member organizations, and promotes the services of member companies. As the use of VR/AR is still fairly new in all industries, it makes sense that those with experience and success come together on a global scale to bring the entire movement forward and at a high level. Therefore, like-mind individuals come together every 2 weeks to share, exchange information, and network. There are various Industry Verticals in VRARA, such as Training, for which I am a co-chair.

CFG: Is VR/AR changing the way companies train employees?
BP: Yes, VR/AR is definitely changing the way companies are training employees. It adds a new dimension to classroom trainings, as well as offers new options on a remote basis. We are no longer limited to web-based trainings, when speaking of remote training.

CFG: What are the benefits of VR/AR?
BP: With AR, I am able to add a 3D object into a classroom training, for everyone to see and work/learn with. With VR, I can place a participant into a virtual room/situation and put them through a learning sequence. In both cases, we are able to train in a secure environment, offering identical and learning controlled trainings to all employees.

There are some interesting statistics supporting learning with VR/AR:

  • 2.3x increased emotional connection to content: It is one thing to take part in a classroom training with other participants, and it is another thing to go through a web-based training. With VR/AR, you use more senses to learn, thus increasing your emotional connection to the subject matter, and improving the chance of remembering and using what you have learned.

  • 4x faster training completion compared to classroom: In a classroom setting, it takes time to teach the subject, practice it, and then review it. With VR/AR you can combine these learning processes which definitely increases not just the speed of learning, but also the capacity.

  • 275% more confidence in applying the new skills: In a standard classroom setting, participants learn, practice and successfully passes a test. However, they miss the practical implementation of what they learned. VR/AR enables them to practice this skill too, which better prepares them for subsequent application in daily work.

CFG: How, in particular, is it being employed in cargo trainings?
BP: I have been involved in AR/VR training conception since mid-2018, in my trainer function at the Lufthansa Cargo Training Academy. Currently, we have two rolled-out trainings using VR/AR, as well as one we are developing for 2021.

The first concept was developed as an AR Build-Up course designed to meet IATA requirements for automobile build-up for air transport. Given than most classrooms are not large enough to hold a vehicle, and it is not always possible to get all participants into a secured warehouse to see an automobile build-up (as this does not happen every day), I used AR to bring an automobile as a 3D into the classroom. This was our first venture into AR-training, which was supported by the Lufthansa Group Innovation Fund, and co-developed with an AR-vendor called 3spin, located in Darmstadt, Germany. The project was piloted several times in the first half of 2019 with much success. The failure rate went from 36% to 7% on the piloted trainings: a number I could have never imagined.

CFG: Why do you think that was?
BP: The training had such great success because the staff who build-up cargo for air transport, are individuals who learn best by doing, and they work in teams on a daily basis. Therefore, I combined these elements into the training. The automobile is brought into the classroom as a 3D object, enabling the staff to learn in a secured/safe environment. I split the class into teams of 4, and each person receives a Microsoft Hololens to wear, along with a personal coaching session on how to operate and navigate the Hololens. Working with each individual group of 4, I guide them through the task of securing the automobile for airlift using the tie-down strap (which is also a 3D object). Each participant gets one tire to work with and secures the tire to the pallet using the techniques they learned in the theoretical part of the course. Everyone sees the same car, and can see what their colleagues are doing. That means they can also help each other out during the session, just like in real life. Combining learning by doing with teamwork in a real-life setting within a secure training atmosphere brings out the best in the participants.

By the way, for this project we were awarded the eLearning Journal Award both for the best Augmented Reality Project in 2020, as well as the Best Project of 2020, and I have been invited as a guest speaker at many events and fairs since then.

CFG: Congratulations, Brian! You mentioned a second and third concept?
BG: Yes. With the second concept, we developed a 360-degree tour of our B777F Freighter. Since many course participants have never been inside the freighter, such a tour is crucial to an employee’s overall training. If a participant cannot visualize what we are teaching, it makes it more difficult for them to connect to and retain the subject being taught. For this, we use the Oculus Quest (VR). Wearing the headset, each participant can tour the freighter at their leisure. Along the way, there are hot spots that they can click on and learn information and facts. Once they complete the tour and know how it looks and functions, they are ready to continue learning about the freighter in a classroom training.

Our third concept currently being developed, is focused on sales. Though sales staff are unable to come to our training headquarters during the pandemic, we still want to teach them the art of making a sales visit. We are creating avatars that are able to react to the words of the participant. The participant will have a choice of sentences to pick from, and depending on what they pick, the avatar will hear the sentence and react in a life-like way. The participant will have the opportunity to take the session often, trying out different options, and learning from their outcomes. I expect this to be a hair-raising event that the participant will soon not forget!

CFG: Has cargo training changed due to the pandemic?
BP: Yes, the pandemic has, of course, also created issues for us in training. The majority of the participants cannot travel to the training headquarters, nor are trainers able to get to them. Since the pandemic reached us quickly, we were limited in the amount of time we had to react and offer solutions/options. We now offer a blended learning concept, using web-based trainings in combination with webinars. These are seen as temporary solutions, until classroom trainings are available again. Long-term, we will continue to offer international colleagues various training options, to allow us and the participants to be able to choose the best possible learning method at that time. Digitalization is here, it has proven to work, and will guide us for the years to come. In the end, we as trainers, will do our utmost to teach our participants as best as possible.

CFG: What have your major learnings been as a trainer over the years?
BP: After 17 years of working for Lufthansa Cargo in New York, I decided to live my dream of becoming a Lufthansa Cargo trainer, at the Training Academy in Seeheim, Germany. That was in 2012. Now almost 10 years later, I definitely have seen the evolution of our trainings in this time, as well as influenced the VR/AR movement myself.

There are several things that are important to me:

  • I believe in having an imaginary toolbox that I can go to at any situation. This allows me to react situationally to the moment and the participant(s). This comes with experience.

  • Think out of the box.

  • Know your participants, and find the best way to reach them.

  • Be open to new ways.

Here are some mottos I hold:

  • Strive for perfection, but perfection is to learn from one’s mistakes

  • Trainer is human, so are participants.

  • There is never a dumb question. The smartest people in the world ask the most questions.

Thank you for your insights, Brian. I look forward to following your association’s developments!

3 Case Studies for Augmented Reality for Food and Beverage: Nespresso, Bianchi Wines, Mazola

By incorporating technologies like Augmented Reality in the Food and Beverage industry, brands have new tools to generate engagement with consumers and boost sales. These innovative experiences inspire customers to see, try and learn about a product using only their mobile phone.

Explore these 3 AR case studies from the Food and Beverage Industry:

KEY BRAND MESSAGES - NESPRESSO
These solutions can also be used to communicate institutional brand campaigns and generate content that adds value to the customer. Nespresso developed a communication element that aims to disseminate its global sustainability platform and consolidate knowledge about its local Recycling program. Through a 360 ° interactive experience you can learn about the sustainable practices that make it possible to obtain exceptional coffee and also shares information about their capsule recycling program. In a dynamic experience, they explain that the used coffee capsule is donated to the NGO Huerta Niño and that the aluminum is then melted to make new objects such as Caran D’Ache notebooks and pens. Furthermore, you can view the limited edition of these products with AR and participate in a trivia game to learn more about the program.

PRODUCT LAUNCH - BIANCHI WINES
With Augmented Reality products come to life and build a storytelling for a campaign that is attractive as well as interactive for the user. Bodegas Bianchi presented its first harvest of ‘IV Generación’ wine incorporating Augmented Reality by scanning the bottle’s label. This experience allows consumers to know much more about the grape’s origins, the soil studies that have been carried out on the terroir, the oenological team, the members of the fourth generation and everything about the characteristics of climate, soil, irrigation, and more.

PACKAGING WITH AR - MAZOLA
Packaging plays a key role in POS and a great competitive advantage would be to expand its communication through Augmented Reality. Consumers can scan the product and obtain additional information about its usage that doesn’t fit on the label. Another tactic is to introduce AR into POP material to create attention-grabbing advertising.

Mazola Mayonnaise carried out a 360 ° experience presenting a typical kitchen context when the product packaging is scanned. There, consumers find different ideas to prepare recipes by following step-by-step instructions. In addition, the final result of the dish can be visualized in 3D, as if it were prepared and waiting on the table.

Use of Virtual Reality (VR) for Defense Training

What is the relevance of VR and AR In Defence ?

Virtual Reality is a technology that simulates real-life experiences and allows people to don their own cyber avatars in a virtual world and interact with it like they would in the real world. The application of VR technology in the military paradigm is to make trainees and officers better at using equipment, navigating a mode of transport, gaining experience of potential combat situations, medical training and more

One of the advantage of VR training in the military is that it offers the functionality to immerse users in a virtual yet safe world. This feature is what makes it so relevant in the defence sector, as it offers militaries and defence contractors a way to gain invaluable experience of dealing with high-stress, life threatening environments from the safety of a training room. On the other hand , AR is often used to solve challenges or for training purposes. AR is effective for warfare simulations, military sand tables, battlefield visualisations, and other applications that require a realistic representation of defence activities.

What Training Challenges Does VR/AR Help Tackle for the Defence & Military?

Technologies like Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality resolve multiple pain points that have plagued military training for years, besides negating specific obstacles to training. Here’s how:

Providing ‘First-Hand’ Experience to Trainees:
Unfortunately, most training ranges don’t offer opportunities to train in such an environment. This is where VR comes into the picture. VR training solutions can give soldiers the experience of being in battle-like situations under complete safety. VR takes computer-based training to another level by providing personnel a chance to interact with real machines, guns, vehicles and environment to train in a safe, controlled environment with fully immersive, multi-user experiences.

Consistent & Scalable Training:
The military sector requires scalable training that can train large numbers of troops or personnel at the same time . Hence, it is crucial to build capacity for practical training at that scale, which is what VR and AR offers. Besides, these platforms ensure consistency of training across thousands of personnel, while also allowing for effective monitoring and evaluation of individual performance.

Training in The Covid-19 Era:
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic if not all, most physical training exercises have been put on hold because of the obvious restrictions on movement. VR and AR training platforms, naturally, offer the most logical and practical solution for this pain point.

Cost-effective Training:
Training in VR and AR brings down the cost of training drastically because the replicas of weapons or vehicles that are simulated in a virtual training application cost way less than actual inventory. For instance, training flights for fighter pilots are more expensive than a VR flight simulator or actual weapons are more costly to train than a simulated weapon training simulator

Measurement and Performance Tracking:
With Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality training platforms, instructors can receive real-time information on their trainees’ performance in a simulated scenario, allowing them to pass on instant, detailed feedback to each trainee. This helps trainees identify their personal strengths and work on their weaknesses a lot better.

Better engagement:
Both AR and VR training modules provide an engaging environment that feels like a serious games. So soldiers and personnel find the training more enjoyable. More often than not, this translates into higher engagement and greater understanding of what they are learning.

Uses & Applications of VR and AR In Military and Defence Training

VR training and AR training both have a plethora of use cases for military training in the Army, Navy and Airforce that enhance the quality of personnel training and increase their chances of carrying out successful missions. Some of these applications are common to all 3 branches of the military while some have a specific use case in a particular branch.

Uses of VR and AR in the Army

  1. Firearm Training:

  2. Electronic Warfare training

  3. Sniper Training

  4. Situational Awareness & Experience:

  5. Armoured Vehicle Simulator

  6. Vehicle Repair and Maintenance in the Battlefield

Uses of VR and AR in the Air Force
1) Flight Simulation
2) Maintenance Repair and Overhaul Training
3) Medical Training

Uses of VR In the Navy
1) Virtual Ship Bridge:
2) Virtual Submarine Simulator:

Final thoughts

The huge potential of Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) is being tapped to create large volume simulation environments for military and paramilitary domains. The VR training and AR training platform is not restricted by the availability of training sites, weather conditions, or the consumption of equipment. This means training can be provided efficiently in a short period of time. As we discovered in this article, VR training and AR help military and defence to combat many training challenges.

Virtual reality takes battle training to the next level by:

  • Allowing trainees to practice and improve their skills in safety

  • Simulating real life situations with precision to help soldiers develop cognitive skills

  • Fostering teamwork, situational awareness and increased stress resistance

  • Training personnel to use weapons, navigate aircraft and naval vessels

  • Facilitating situations to train medical military personnel

  • Resolving logistical roadblocks to training

  • Minimizing costs incurred on real world training

T-Mobile Partners with Healium to Help Honor Veterans

T-mobile recently partnered with Healium, a virtual human performance channel, to provide free virtual "flights" to terminally ill or aging Veterans unable to physically travel to see their memorials in Washington, DC.

It’s Military Appreciation Month, and we honor those who have served our country. T-Mobile today announced it is teaming up with Healium to bring a virtual Honor Flight experience to veterans living in small towns across the country, transporting them with the power of Virtual Reality (VR) and 5G to visit the Washington D.C. war memorials from the comfort of their own homes.

There’s no need to travel. T-Mobile and Healium are equipping Honor Flight Network volunteers with VR headsets and Inseego 5G MiFi M2000 hotspots, so our country’s veterans can virtually experience the sights and sounds of the memorials dedicated to them. With T-Mobile Extended Range 5G covering 1.6 million square miles, this toolkit enables volunteers to travel to remote locations, meet with veterans in their homes and run a high-bandwidth VR experience using the T-Mobile 5G network.

From the comfort of their living rooms, veterans are virtually transported to Washington D.C. — just as if they were there in person — where they can tour the war memorials that commemorate their service and honor their fallen comrades. In the virtual tours, veterans can hear the sound of the Rainbow Pool, watch the Changing of the Guard at Arlington National Cemetery, and visit the World War II Memorial, Korean War Veterans Memorial, Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the Women in Military Service For America Memorial. There’s even a virtual tour of the USS Nimitz in the Pacific Ocean.

“We are losing our World War II Veterans at a rate of hundreds a day, and sadly many may not live long enough to be able to see their memorials in person,” said Sarah Hill, CEO, Healium. “This is a such a powerful application that can help us reach Veterans, including those living in small towns and remote locations. While nothing is as good as a real, in-person Honor Flight trip, this is a beautiful way to take Veterans there if they’re not able to travel.”

Healium is as an early leader in Mixed Reality solutions designed to improve mental fitness. Since 2015, it has supported the volunteer efforts of Central Missouri Honor Flight, a non-profit organization dedicated to honoring those who served and sacrificed for our country. The Honor Flight Network is a national network of independent Hubs, each dedicated to transporting U.S. military veterans to see the Washington, D.C. war memorials at no cost to the veterans.

“5G is the enabler for VR applications that can transport us to new places, giving us immersive experiences that better connect us to our world,” said John Saw, EVP of Advanced & Emerging Technologies at T-Mobile. “We are delighted to team up with Healium and Honor Flight Network to help give back to those who have served our country. With 5GForAll we can bring transformative services such as this to everyone, including those living in rural America.”

Building #5GForAll
T-Mobile is America’s 5G leader with the largest, fastest and most reliable 5G network. T-Mobile’s Extended Range 5G covers 295 million people across 1.6 million square miles. Design Interactive Partners with Hitachi to Win Army’s xTech Direct-to-Phase II SBIR

xtechsbir-banner.png

Sponsored by the Army’s new xTech SBIR program, Design Interactive has partnered with Hitachi to win a Direct-to-Phase II Award. Under Topic F of the solicitation (Condition Based Maintenance for Combat Vehicles), Design Interactive proposed the development of AUGMENTOR® Data Unification Operations (DUO).

AUGMENTOR® DUO is a Soldier-centered diagnostic tool that uses a hybrid approach to condition-based maintenance modeling which will improve the Army’s ability to manage complex systems by providing data and analytics to support preemptive and predictive maintenance.

Like traditional predictive modeling techniques, DUO combines onboard sensor data with vehicle-specific history and aggregates this data across a fleet of similar, peer vehicles. What makes DUO unique, is the fusion of the traditional data with physics and material models of components and Soldier-provided data. This data fusion not only allows DUO to better diagnose the most likely current condition but also provides a prognosis that predicts the likely remaining useful life of a component. Additionally, it results in a more accurate diagnosis of the current condition, a prognosis that predicts the remaining useful life (RUL) of a component, and fully integrates the Soldier into condition-based maintenance. Ultimately, DUO will result in increased fleet and personnel readiness.

Design Interactive is a small woman-owned business founded in 1998, headquartered in Orlando, Florida with over 20 years of human factors, user-centered design, and modeling expertise. For more information on Design Interactive, please visit us at https://www.designinteractive.net/.

BIM Planning and viewing, consistently in 3D stereo: 3D PluraView and ELITECAD make it possible

Caption:  The symbiosis of 3D PluraView stereo monitors from Schneider Digital with the CAD software ELITECAD from XEOMETRIC is ideal for an optimal experience of three-dimensional planning and real 3D / VR model visualization for CAD and BIM.

Caption:  The symbiosis of 3D PluraView stereo monitors from Schneider Digital with the CAD software ELITECAD from XEOMETRIC is ideal for an optimal experience of three-dimensional planning and real 3D / VR model visualization for CAD and BIM.

The cooperation between Schneider Digital and XEOMETRIC / ELITECAD optimally combines the strength of three-dimensional planning capabilities and stereoscopic graphic output. 3D modeling and design with ELITECAD, viewed stereoscopically with the 3D PluraView monitor from Schneider Digital - a first-class and comfortable combination! Schneider Digital has revolutionized stereoscopic graphic displays with the 3D PluraView monitor product family and with ELITECAD Architecture 15, XEOMETRIC now maximizes these hardware capabilities. Together, this creates the best 3D stereo experience for planners and architects working with architectural models and BIM applications.

3D planning and modeling is indispensable and has long been established in architecture, construction, for complex BIM models and mechanical CAD construction. Despite this, the planner or architect is mostly content with a two-dimensional representation on ‘flat’ computer screens and is happy with traditional, large-format 2D printouts. For better insight into spatial relationships, perspective views are created, models are rendered again and again, the design is checked from all sides and perhaps even interactively visualized, if a VR-glasses mode is already implemented. However, working in true three-dimensional mode is not the standard yet. Why is this?

The previous generation of stereo output devices, in combination with active or passive 3D glasses, were simply not well suited for longer work. Often the resolution left a lot to be desired, the frame rate and / or refresh rates were too low, the glasses were uncomfortable to wear, the stereo images was quite dark and active LCD glasses exhibited a persistent background flickering, In short, the “3D stereo sensation” was rather flickering, awkward and tiring. In short - not at all ‚sensational‘.

VR headsets / glasses as an alternative?

With the exception of ELITECAD, very few CAD systems offer VR (Virtual Reality) visualization as an integrated viewing mode. If VR viewing is offered at all, users are often limited to just viewing without any other functionality, i.e. for any modifications, the user has to switch back to the monoscopic CAD environment. In case of outsourcing parts of the work, the dataset must be made available again after implementing changes. An important aspect of VR usage is the fact that the surrounding (office) environment is completely hidden during use. For a truly immersive experience this is desirable and certainly impressive. As part of the overall modeling work tasks - possibly together with other colleagues in the office - it is more comfortable to be able to see also the normal environment. All the more, since VR Headsets are relatively heavy and cover the face much like a scuba-diving mask. During VR use, many people feel unwell as the visual perception does not match the sense of equilibrium. At this point, 3D modeling on a desktop 3D-Stereo monitor comes back into the game again.

Ideal 3D / VR symbiosis of CAD software and stereo monitor

In ELITECAD, 3D planning and simultaneous stereoscopic viewing is fully integrated and works perfectly with the 3D PluraView monitor series from Schneider Digital. The German manufacturer has been a full service solution provider for professional 4K, 3D and VR hardware for over 25 years, with a special focus on Geographic Information Systems, CAx and BIM / architecture. Following a detailed evaluation of their respective solutions, it quickly became clear for both companies: the seamless interaction between software and hardware provides an optimal 3D stereo experience for the user. This strategic cooperation has already been anchored in the latest version of ELITECAD Architecture 15, as the optimal settings for the 3D PluraView stereo monitors are preconfigured in the software. This means that the use of this innovative hardware is supported as easily and efficiently as any other activity in ELITECAD.

What exactly is so special about the 3D PluraView technology?

The main benefit for users is the stereoscopic screen output. The software creates two images of a scene that are exactly at eye distance from each other. This is the basic requirement for spatial vision. The simplest variant for stereoscopic viewing are the red / green anaglyph glasses. Of course, stereoscopic dual-screen systems, such as the 3D PluraView products, provide an incomparably better experience.

Thanks to one screen display per eye, the absolutely flicker-free beam splitter technology delivers the full monitor resolution up to 4K / UHD and therefore very high stereo image sharpness with the highest level of detail. The optimal, double brightness and the highest color brilliance (up to 10 bit) enable the user to work comfortably and without fatigue. The new BlackTuner technology of the 3D PluraView (28” model) supports the user, for example, in reliably capturing objects even in dark image areas. A response time of just 1ms eliminates "ghosting" and motion blurring. The precise, pixel-perfect image representation enables a truly spatial experience even in office daylight conditions, without blocking out the environment. This experience is additionally supported in ELITECAD by correctly displaying cursors or markers at the correct 3D depth. All necessary plug-and-play stereo configurations for the 3D PluraView displays in ELITECAD Architecture 15 are already set. For all users who want to go one step further in the direction of Virtual Reality, Schneider Digital also offers its 3D PluraView monitor in a VR version with integrated head tracking and object control by tracking sticks and spheres.

Who is the combination of 3D PluraView and ELITECAD suitable for?

The complete solution consisting of ELITECAD software and 3D PluraView monitors is particularly useful in architectural planning and 3D modeling or BIM (Building Information Modeling), especially if combined with laser scanning and point cloud visualization. With ELITECAD it is possible to consistently display the entire planning process stereoscopically. The new software version for architectural planning and building modeling simplifies day-to-day planning and offers efficiency and convenience in use. Not only because point clouds can be imported directly from laser scanners and visualized stereoscopically, but also because XEOMETRIC, together with Schneider Digital, has implemented the 3D mouse pointer perfectly in ELITECAD. Only if the cursor is able to intuitively reach every point, surface or edge in the (holographic) 3D space, the advantages of stereoscopic visualization are converted into an increase in workflow efficiency. Also in many other application areas, e.g. in mechanical construction and geodesy, users benefit from the combination of fast loading times for large amounts of data, efficient modeling and high-resolution three-dimensional, holographic 3D-Stereo graphics output of points, areas and textures.

All details about the 3D stereo monitors from Schneider Digital can be found at www.3d-pluraview.com, all information about ELITECAD from XEOMETRIC at www.de.elitecad.eu.
